Your Local Security Blanket – Bickimer Electric & Your Peace of Mind

Times aren’t what they used to be. We hear that all the time, and when it comes to the security of our home or business, it’s a sad reality that things really aren’t what they used to be. Security systems are a fantastic peace of mind tool. Still, with so many choices and so much complicated equipment, sometimes it can feel like a degree in rocket science wouldn’t be enough.

That’s where Bickimer Electric comes in. With more than a decade of experience in the security space, we take the entire headache away. In this article, our security experts cover some of the basic principles of security, and tips for choosing the system that’s right for your needs.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION?

Choosing a security system setup to suit your needs is tough, especially when you don’t fully understand your needs. There are so many options available, limited only by your budget and imagination. Here are some of the most common components, with a brief description:

Motion Lights: Nighttime security lights, usually mounted on the outside of a building that activate when they detect motion, often prompting camera systems to begin recording

Motion Sensors: Usually mounted inside a building, with 180-degree fields of coverage, motion sensors detect movement and can trigger any number of actions, from silent alarms to police response, camera recording, audible alarms, locking gates, texts, phone calls, and email alerts.

Cameras: Detecting a break-in is half the battle. Capturing footage to support a prosecution is the other half. There are hundreds of different camera options depending on your needs, but all serve the same basic function.

Alarm Systems: Interfacing with motion and window/door sensors, alarm systems can provide a silent or audible warning of a break-in. Some make use of monitoring companies that can tie into your other security systems, alert the police to an alarm, or contact a keyholder.

ONLINE, OFFLINE, NETWORK, WIFI?

How you want to interact with your security system really begins to narrow down your options into something manageable, but there are many choices available:

A system that records all security data and stores it online, providing access through an app. This can be a good option for remote access, but live views can be slow with cloud servers depending on the device you’re using.

Online Cloud Servers

An air gap system is entirely self-contained. All security data is recorded on a secure terminal that is not connected to any other computers, or the internet. This is a good option for smaller buildings or those with a limited budget.

Offline Air-Gapped Systems

Networked systems allow multiple devices to connect and access security data, either remotely through the internet, or through a closed network where only those in a specific area, or with the correct software can read it. Network systems are typically used by monitoring companies, while also allowing the owner to monitor.

Network Systems

WiFi systems are the newest trend, eliminating the hundreds of feet of wires needed for traditional systems, powered by batteries or a short power cord to a dedicated socket. These systems connect to a WiFi system and can be accessed by any device with the right app and login information.

AUDIO?

Audio monitoring is a complicated subject in many areas because of legal privacy concerns. For any audio questions, and for the latest information, contact your local police or sheriffs department and ask what the audio recording requirements in your area are.
